Mirk & The New Familiars! They got a new fresh sound, with a certain sense of familiarity… Like when you pop in the CD no matter where you are you’re home, you know? It’s an exciting time for music. So saturated with BS, the pop scene is moving underground again. As was Detroit in the 50’s and 60’s, and as Seattle in the 90’s… independent artists and labels are coming through and doing what the majors seem to fail miserably at… Putting out great music for the people to love!!
Born and raised in Albany, Joshua “Mirk” Mirsky took an early passion for music to new heights by teaching himself piano and drums. Before long, Mirk new his way around the studio and began recording hip-hop records while simultaneously acting as a drummer for a local rock band.
In 2008, he began the construction of an ensemble by individually selecting musicians, who would later be known as Mirk & The New Familiars. The 7-piece group churns out a “futuristic retro” R&B pop sound, featuring rich vocal harmonies and colorful, tasteful instrumentation.
Retro funk mob Midnight Spaghetti & The Chocolate G-Strings has been satisfying discriminating dancers with monster grooves since January 2003. Their blend of classic funk, conscious frenetic rap, a killer horn section, and a contagious enthusiasm for life left people wondering what planet they came from, but more importantly, how they could get on that mothership.
Keeping the old school party vibe of Digital Underground and Trouble Funk alive, Midnight Spaghetti takes the beat and runs with it in progressive directions. There are definite similarities to the contemporary genre-bending hip hop group Ozomatli, as well as the ruckus attitude of the early Red Hot Chili Peppers, but listen closely to the lyrics and you'll find the brainy humor to be reminiscent of Frank Zappa.
